Portfolio

Here is a selection from my portfolio of bindings and restoration work. Most of these are unique pieces, commissions or gifts. While some of these photographs highlight specific details from the binding structures, others show details from the bindings such as headbands, titles or decoration.

As you can see from my portfolio I am always looking for fresh combinations of materials, various types of paper, cloth with paper, or leather. If any of these binding structures or materials specifically interest you, feel free to contact me through the Contact page for details and pricing. I am currently open for commissions and requests.

Headbands can be a great little details to make a book pop. Ranging from simple wound headbands, to more intricate constructions made of leather strips, or the French style triple headband. Other details may be ribbons, ties, clasps or other closures using magnets.

Classical bookbinding

Below are three bindings for examination of the VOHB course in hand bookbinding. From left to right a Gothic (or English) binding in half leather, a French binding in half leather with clamshell box, and a German binding in full vellum with slipcase. All of these are finished to my highest standard, using all the skills at my disposal.

Modern bookbinding

Through the years, many people have made modern variations on the three main classical structures above. Think of the K118 binding, Three Coverboard Structure (Jan Sobota) or the Simplified Binding (Sün Evrard). As part of my personal training I like to make a few of all of these to see what their main features are.

Creative bookbinding

Below are some examples of more creative bindings I make, using a combination of the skills I learned through courses, as well as the excellent books by Keith Smith. The books by Keith Smith are a great resource for the creative bookbinder for the sheer endless options and variations his series offers in mostly non-adhesive bindings.

Boxes

This is a selection of collection boxes from the past years. They are for photographs, prints, and in one case a herbarium. I really enjoy making these three-dimensional structures. They combine the precision and materials from bookbinding with a more spatial kind of work.
