A Forest of Books
Many of the binding types detailed below can be made in a variety of forms and materials. Please contact us for bespoke and personalised options.
Gothic binding
Dating back to the Middle Ages, Gothic bindings are one of the sturdiest bindings around. The bookblock is bound onto single or double cords. Usually fashioned in full or half leather, the spine is glued directly to the bookblock, for maximum flexibility.

German binding
The German, or Bradel binding, was invented in Germany in the 18th century. It features a rounded back and clearly defined joints.

Creative bindings
This includes anything from Coptic, criss-cross (also: secret Belgian), long stitch variants, to photo albums and Asian style bindings. These are the perfect gift for someone who writes, draws or just needs to take notes in something stylish and personal.

French binding
French binding is often regarded as the poshest of binding types around. With its hollow back that follows the curve of the spine and boards perfectly, it lends itself to decorative treatments very well.

Case binding
Case binding is the commonplace solution for many books these days. An easy construction in two parts makes for a perfect binding for smaller books and notebooks.

Limp vellum
The luxury material vellum, with its tactile qualities and beautiful colour gradations, was used by binders in the middle ages and found a revival in the arts and crafts movement.

A bevy of Boxes
Boxes are useful in many aspects of life, be it for containing precious books or objects, to keep print or photo collections, for your herbarium, or just to contain memories or pencils.
Solander boxes
The solander (or clamshell) box is perfect for housing books. These boxes are made to size for specific books, and are a great way to protect rare or vulnerable books.

Collection boxes
Collectors of photographs, prints and drawings know the importance of safe storage of their prized possessions. We make boxes for all kinds of collections using archival safe materials.

Pencil cases and tool cases
A smaller variety of box is the pencil (or brush, or pen) case. A simple, but elegant structure, available in a wide variety of materials and finishes.

Keepsake boxes
Boxes are perfect for storing polaroids, postcards, love letters or just generally keepsakes.

Slipcase
The made to measure slipcase protects vulnerable books from the worst of the outside influences. Not entirely enclosed, like the clamshell, this case still shows the book’s spine.
